Study Team

Phase I/II non-randomized, controlled trial, evaluating the safety and efficacy of neurotrophin therapy delivered during cochlear implant surgery

Collaborative team

The clinical trial was achieved by the extraordinary collaboration of university researchers, hearing scientists, engineers, clinicians and clinical trial specialists from UNSW, University of Sydney, Melbourne University & the Bionics Institute, Macquarie University, NextSense and international collaborators.

The cochlear implant gene delivery device was developed by industry partner Cochlear Ltd working with the UNSW BaDGE team and the programme was principally funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Development Grant and the Passe & Williams Foundation.

The trial was successful because of the extraordinary support of the clinical trial participants, who had confidence in the science and the team which built the study, and generously contributed their time by attending the many follow-up visits to the Macquarie University hearing hub in the year following their surgery.
